Why Takayama from Nagoya?

Takayama (高山) is a small mountain city in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, known for its preserved Edo-era merchant streets, morning markets, and hida beef. It is the most popular day trip from Nagoya and one of the best side trips in central Japan.

The JR Hida Limited Express connects Nagoya to Takayama directly through the mountains — no transfers needed. The scenery along the Hida River gorge is worth the trip alone.

Getting There: The Hida Wide Pass

Direct Train

• Route: JR Nagoya Station → JR Takayama Station (Hida Limited Express)
• Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
• Cost: ¥6,140 one way (unreserved), ¥6,870 (reserved)
• Frequency: Roughly every 1–2 hours. First departure around 07:43, last return around 20:00.

Hida Round Trip Ticket (Best Value for Day Trips)

JR Central sells a discounted round-trip ticket for the Nagoya–Takayama route:

• Price: ¥9,000 (vs. ¥12,280 standard round trip — saves ¥3,280)
• Validity: Valid for the date of purchase only (day trip ticket)
• Buy at: JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-Madoguchi) at Nagoya Station
• Includes: Reserved seats on the Hida Limited Express, both directions

What to Do in Takayama

Miyagawa Morning Market (宮川朝市)

Open daily 7:00–12:00 along the east bank of the Miyagawa River. Vendors sell pickles (tsukemono), rice crackers (senbei), local sake, handmade crafts, and seasonal produce. The market runs rain or shine — about 40 stalls in summer, fewer in winter.

Tip: Try the mitarashi dango (soy-glazed rice dumplings, ¥100) at the stalls near the bridge. The sarubobo cloth dolls (¥300–800) are the signature Takayama souvenir.

Sanmachi Suji (三町筋)

Three parallel streets of preserved merchant houses from the Edo period, now housing sake breweries, miso shops, cafes, and craft stores. Look for the sugidama (cedar ball) hanging outside buildings — it signals a sake brewery. Many offer free tastings.

Must-stops:

• Funasaka Sake Brewery — free tasting of 5–6 varieties
• Kamisannomachi street — the most photogenic stretch
• Any senbei shop — hand-grilled rice crackers for ¥150–300

Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋)

The only surviving Edo-era government building in Japan. The interior is well-preserved with tatami rooms, a rice storehouse, and a small torture chamber exhibit. English audio guide available.

Sakurayama Hachimangu & Festival Floats Museum

If you are visiting outside the festival dates (April 14–15, October 9–10), the Festival Floats Museum (Yatai Kaikan) displays four of the actual festival floats in a dedicated hall. The mechanical puppet (karakuri) demonstration runs on the hour.

Where to Eat Hida Beef

Hida beef (飛騨牛) is the regional wagyu — richly marbled, tender, and significantly cheaper than Kobe or Matsusaka beef because it is less well-known internationally.

Sit-Down Options

• Maruaki — Hida beef set lunch from ¥2,500. Grilled at your table. Near Sanmachi Suji.
• Ajikura Tengoku — Steak and sukiyaki sets from ¥3,000. Consistently good, moderate wait.
• Le Midi — French-Japanese fusion with hida beef. ¥3,500 lunch course. Reservations recommended.

Street Food (Faster, Cheaper)

• Hida beef sushi (¥600–800 for 2 pieces) — available from multiple stalls on Sanmachi Suji. Raw or seared hida beef on vinegared rice, served on a rice cracker instead of a plate. This is the signature street food.
• Hida beef croquette (¥200–300) — fried potato croquette with minced hida beef. Sold at butcher shops along the walking route.
• Hida beef bun (nikuman, ¥400) — steamed bun with hida beef filling. Available at several shops near the morning market.

Practical Tips

• Sit on the left side of the train (heading to Takayama) for the best views of the Hida River gorge — the scenery is dramatic between Gero and Takayama.
• Coin lockers are available at Takayama Station (¥400–700). Store your bag before exploring — the old town streets are narrow.
• Cash is king. Many market stalls and smaller restaurants are cash-only. Withdraw at the 7-Eleven ATM near the station.
• Winter visits (Dec–Feb): The old town under snow is beautiful but cold (often below 0°C). Wear warm layers and waterproof shoes. The morning market still runs but with fewer stalls.
• Combine with Shirakawa-go? Possible but tight for a day trip from Nagoya. The bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go takes 50 minutes each way — you would need to skip several Takayama sights or take the earliest train out.
